Cowley College to conduct softball clinic

The five-time defending Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division champion Cowley College softball team will host a softball clinic May 29-30 in Arkansas City.

The clinic will run from 9 a.m. to noon at Lady Tiger Field. Clinic participants will be divided into age groups.

The clinic is designed to cover skills needed to become a highly successful and complete softball player. Cowley head coach Ed Hargrove and Lady Tiger assistant coach Brandi Webb will provide individual instruction, as will returning players from the five-time defending conference champion Lady Tiger softball team.

Hargrove has led Cowley to 15 Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division titles in his 24 years as head coach. Hargrove is the winningest coach in Cowley sports history, and his 865 victories rank him second in the nation on the National Junior College Athletic Association’s wins list of active softball coaches.  Also, the 865 victories are the most by any coach in Region VI.

Webb played at Cowley in 2001 and 2002 and earned First-Team All-Conference and All-Region accolades as a freshman and sophomore. She was also selected Team MVP, nominated for All-American honors and helped lead the team to a national tournament appearance for the first time in school history.

Offensively, the coaches will break down the individuals swing-, by teaching swinging for power, slap bunting, bunting basics, and how to find the right bat for your swing.
The 2008 Lady Tiger softball team finished with a team batting average of .383, and belted a school-record 70 home runs.

Defensively, the camp will work on teaching proper fielding, throwing basics, and fielding the bunt and slap hit.

Jacey Juden, Kashilia Young and Breayle Tackett will be among the Lady Tigers helping work the clinic as will Arkansas City High School standout and soon to be Lady Tiger Sara Hocker.

The cost to attend the clinic is $40. Participants will receive a camp T-shirt and lunch on the final day of the clinic. For more information, or to reserve a spot in the clinic, call Brandi Webb at (620) 442-0141. You can also e-mail Webb at webb@cowley.edu and include your name, age, address and shirt size.
