Young named second-team All-American

Kashilia YoungPutting together the most impressive offensive season in school history, Cowley College freshman Kashilia Young was recently named a NJCAA Division II second-team All-American.

Young, the Freshman of the Year in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division, broke the school-record for home runs in a season and career (29), RBI’s in a season (90), runs scored in a season (75), batting average in a season (.537), and total bases in a season (192).

“In the 24 years I have been here we have only had a handful of players make All-American as a freshman,” Cowley head coach Ed Hargrove said. “It is quite an honor to be put on the All-American team and is a reward for the season she had.”

Young led the nation in home runs, was third in runs batted in, and seventh in batting average. She had a valid argument to be a first-team All-American, but finished behind Phoenix College’s Lacey Goodman, who batted .538 with 27 home runs and 108 RBI’s. Goodman helped lead Phoenix to its fifth straight national title.

Young, who helped Cowley to its fourth straight Jayhawk East title, was humbled to receive the award.

“Being named an All-American makes all the hard work worth it,” Young said. “The coaches deserve a lot of credit for working with us on hitting and having us in the weight room.”

Young more than doubled the previous school-record for home runs in a season (14) set by Lacey Pendry during the 2006 season. However, she does not step to the plate with the thought of trying to hit a home run.

“I go up there just to hit the ball,” Young said. “I don’t try to only hit home runs, I also want to have a good batting average. If the ball goes out, then they go out. If not, I just want to make solid contact.”

With four all-conference players returning and a stellar recruiting class coming in, Young is optimistic about the 2009 season.

“I am really excited about next season,” Young said. “We have a good core of returning players and some good incoming freshmen, so we should be even better than last season.”
