Young, Tackett named first-team NFCA All-Americans
With voting conducted by NJCAA Division II softball coaches, Cowley College
freshmen Kashilia Young and Breayle Tackett were recently named first-team
National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Americans.
Young, who was a second-team NJCAA Division II All-American, joined fellow
catcher Lacey Goodman of Phoenix College on the first-team.
“It was good to see those two share the first-team spot because they
had maybe the best two offensive seasons of any players in the nation,” Cowley
head coach Ed Hargrove said.
Young, the Freshman of the Year in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division,
broke the school-record for home runs in a season and career (29), RBI’s
in a season (90), runs scored in a season (75), batting average in a
season (.537), and total bases in a season (192). She led the nation
in home runs, was third in runs batted in, and seventh in batting average.
Tackett, who played third base for the Lady Tigers, batted .480 with
eight home runs, 70 RBI’s, and a school-record 30 doubles. She
struck out just three times in 177 at bats, an average of one strikeout
every 59 at bats.
“She definitely had an All-American type of season both offensively and
defensively,” Hargrove said.
Along with being named All-Americans, Young and Tackett were joined on
the NFCA All-Region team by Lady Tiger teammate Sarah Smith. The freshman
second baseman batted .406 with five home runs and 38 RBI’s. Smith
also had 10 doubles as she was third on the team in slugging percentage.
“She had a good year and this was a nice honor for her,” Hargrove
said.
