Continuing
to grow as a team, the Cowley College men’s tennis squad played
three competitive matches at the Seminole Trojan Festival held Friday
and Saturday in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Cowley opened with a 7-2 loss to Collin College on Friday, but bounced
back to defeat Arkansas Fort Smith 5-4 on Saturday. Cowley nearly made
it two wins on the weekend before suffering a hard fought 5-4 loss to
Seminole State.
The Tigers then hosted Johnson County in a match on Monday. The Cavaliers
won four of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches as they
won the match by a score of 6-3.
“Johnson has got their best team I can remember them having in quite
a while,” Cowley head coach Josh Cobble said.
Although the team came up on the short end in three of its four matches,
Cobble likes what he is seeing from his squad.
“When I put the schedule together I was not worried about wins and losses,
I am more worried about preparing us for regionals and nationals,” Cobble
said. “I think we are real close to putting it all together.”
Freshman Boomer Saia picked up a pair of wins at No. 6 singles as he
rallied to defeat Seminole State’s Nick Steifer 4-6, 6-4, 10-5,
and Arkansas Fort Smith’s Nate Bergman 3-6, 6-4, 10-1.
“Boomer played some good tennis for us, winning two three-set matches,” Cobble
said.
The doubles combination of Diego Motivar and Richard Filkuka (pictured)
played exceptional tennis for the Tigers at No. 1 doubles as they won
all four of their matches. The duo also continued their stellar singles
play as Motivar won all four of his matches at No. 2 singles, while Filkuka
went 3-1 at No. 1 singles.
The Tiger tennis team will be back in action Saturday when they play
at Barton County at noon. They will then play at Bethany College Sunday
at 11 a.m.
