With
five singles players and two doubles teams advancing to the second
round, the Cowley College men’s tennis team has gotten off to
a good start at the NJCAA Division I National Tennis Tournament in
Plano, Texas.
On Monday, Cowley got singles wins from Ignacio Velez and Sean Cobble
at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Fellow Tigers Richard Filkuka,
Diego Motivar, and Boomer Saia received a bye in the first round.
Cowley’s Bruce Maytubby suffered a first-round loss against New
Mexico’s Danny Dominguez. However, Maytubby teamed with Velez to
defeat a doubles team from Temple Community College in the first round
of No. 3 doubles.
Filkuka and Motivar received a bye in the first round of No. 1 doubles,
while the doubles tandem of Cobble and Saia lost a hard fought three-set
match to Seminole State’s Brett Little/Armando Morales.
The Tiger tennis team will resume play in the national tournament today
in Plano, Texas.

•No. 1 — Richard Filkuka (CC) received a bye in the first round.
•No. 2 — Diego Motivar (CC) received a bye in the first round.
•No. 3 — Ignacio Velez (CC) defeated Jarrett Beasley (Central Alabama)
6-0, 6-0.
•No. 4 — Sean Cobble (CC) defeated Blake Cutright (Lake Land) 6-2,
6-1.
•No. 5 — Bruce Maytubby (CC) lost to Danny Dominguez (New Mexico)
1-6, 1-6.
•No. 6 — Boomer Saia (CC) received a bye in the first round.
DOUBLES
•No. 1 — Filkuka/Motivar received a bye in the first round.
•No. 2 — Cobble/Saia lost (CC) lost to Brett Little/Armando Morales
(Seminole State) 1-6, 6-3, 2-6.
•No. 3 — Maytubby/Velez (CC) defeated Michael Smathers/Eric Tobin
(Temple) 7-6 (2), 6-3.
