Cowley track and field teams gets work done at home meet

Sean BrownGearing up for the Region VI/Jayhawk Conference Championships, the Cowley College men and women’s indoor track and field teams got in a final tune up by hosting the Cowley Snowball Invite Wednesday in Arkansas City.

With the sun shining and temperatures near 50 degrees, the Tiger indoor track and field teams took to the outdoors to hit a few more national qualifying marks. With entries into indoor meets tough to come by, Cowley decided to host the outdoor meet.

Six schools took part in the meet, including New Mexico Junior College, which was supposed to compete at the University of Houston but instead decided to come to Cowley.

Despite several members of Cowley’s track and field teams battling illness, five Tiger men had new national qualifying performances as Matthew Silovsky had a time of 1:59.76 in the 800-meter run, Justin Viewins had a time of 1:15.78 in the 600-yard run, John Kenney had a time of 22.05 in the 200-meter dash, and Jordan Pote and Colziah Jones qualified for nationals in the pole vault.

“We got some things done and took care of some qualifying,” Cowley head coach Mark Phillips said.

Kelsey Poljansek led Cowley’s women at the meet by placing first in the shot put and weight throw. Xandria Cash also fared well as she won the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.91.

Cowley will compete at the Region VI/Jayhawk Conference Championships in Highland on Feb. 23-24. The Lady Tigers will look to defend their region and conference titles, while the men will also be in the hunt for conference and region titles.
