Poljansek breaks school-record in discus at KU Relays

Preparing to leave Cowley College with every throws record except the indoor weight throw, sophomore Kelsey Poljansek (pictured) broke her own school-record in the discus while competing at the KU Relays over the weekend.

Poljansek placed sixth in the discus with a mark of 160 feet. The only athletes that finished ahead of Poljansek were from NCAA Division I schools. Poljansek also placed 15th in the shot put (44-8 ¾) and 20th in the hammer (136-10).

The 4x880-yard relay team of Brianna Byers, Jeniffer Cherono, Jessica McLeod, and Bethany Schmidt hit the national qualifying mark with a ninth place time of 9:49.30. Ashley Cronin also ran well as she placed 20th with a national qualifying time of 18:44.39 in the 5,000-meter run.

On the men’s side, Jonathan Cherono and Adam Wolkins each placed fifth in their respective events. Cherono’s time of 9:42.00 in the 3,000-mete run trailed only runners from the University of Nebraska, University of Illinois, Nebraska University, and the University of Kansas.

Wolkins’ toss of 217-feet-six inches in the javelin placed him ahead of several NCAA Division I athletes.

The Cowley track and field teams will be back in action Saturday when they take part in the Oklahoma University J.D. Martin Invite.
