Cowley College offering vault camp/speed development camp

Fresh off leading the Cowley College men and women’s track and field teams to its second straight conference titles and a trip to the NJCAA National Outdoor Championships, the Tiger coaching staff is preparing to conduct a vault camp/speed development camp for middle school and high school-aged students in June at the Tiger Track and Field Complex.

The vault camp will be held June 2-5. Participants will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The clinic is designed to help beginning as well as experienced vaulters learn to vault safely and correctly using technique drills and routines.

Participants will be taught proper pole carry, run mechanics, plant timing, and take-off and bar clearance. There also will be an emphasis on approach, plant and take-off. Pole selection and proper training also will be discussed. Video analysis will be used to help the participants learn.

Cowley head coach Mark Phillips will conduct the camp. In 23 years of coaching the vault, Phillips has coached 48 junior college All-Americans, eight national champions, and one national record holder, including 2008 national indoor champ David Starnes.

The cost of the clinic is $75. Pre-registration will run until May 29. Those interested may also register at the track from 8-8:30 a.m. on June 2. Each participant who pre-registers will receive a T-shirt.

For more information or to register for the camp, contact Phillips at 442-1594 or e-mail him at phillips@cowley.edu.

The speed development camp will take place June 9-12. Participants will meet from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

The speed development camp will teach drills and routines to help athletes from all sports become more efficient in their running technique and faster in their running ability. Video analysis will be used to help the participants learn. Phillips has coached 72 NJCAA All-Americans in the sprints.

The cost of the camp is $75. Pre-registration will run until June 8. Participants may also register at the track on June 9 between 8-8:30 a.m. Each participant who pre-registers will receive a T-shirt.

For more information or to register for the camp, contact Phillips at 442-1594 or e-mail him at phillips@cowley.edu.
