Lady Tigers’ win third straight

Women's Basketball gameHolding Allen County to 32.7 percent shooting, while forcing 20 turnovers, the Cowley College women’s basketball team picked up its third straight win with a 56-36 victory over the Lady Red Devils Wednesday at W.S. Scott Auditorium.

Allen County was the third straight opponent to score less than 40 points against the Lady Tigers.

“We ended up with a nice win, but our energy level is a little low right now,” Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. “We got stops when we needed them and held them down in the second half.”

Cowley led 25-18 at the end of the first half and just 33-28 after a basket by Allen County’s Joanna Ortiz with 10:30 remaining. However, Cowley used a 12-2 run over the next five minutes of play to lead 45-30.

The Lady Tigers were never threatened again en route to the 20-point win. A key to the victory was Cowley’s rebounding as they out-boarded Allen County 45-20.

Freshman post player Whitney Williams finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Bebe Holloway added 10 points, nine rebounds, and five steals.

“Bebe and Whtney had good games,” Clark said.

Lauren Cherry chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds, and Gabbie Curtis added 11 points and four boards. The win improves Cowley’s record to 14-9 overall and 9-2 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. The Lady Tigers are now in a three-way tie for second place in the conference, one game behind conference leading Coffeyville.

Cowley will get a chance to catch Coffeyville for the top spot in the conference when the two teams square off Saturday in Coffeyville at 5 p.m.

“Hopefully, we will come with a little bit more energy over the weekend and see what we can do,” Clark said.

Allen County is now 10-13 overall and 3-8 in the Jayhawk East.
