Lady Tigers’ rally falls short in 72-71 loss at Coffeyville

The Cowley College women's basketball team nearly rallied from a 12-point second half deficit before falling at Coffeyville Community College Saturday by a score of 72-71.

The Lady Tigers trailed 41-29 at the end of the first half but came back to trail just 69-68 with less than a minute left. Coffeyville's Tarita Gordon hit a huge three-pointer to put the Lady Red Ravens ahead 72-68, before Cowley's Elena Yankova answered with a three-pointer with just 2.3 seconds left. Yankova's three would be the final scoring in the game as Coffeyville escaped with the one-point win.

Turnovers by the Lady Tigers in the first half helped Coffeyville open the double digit lead.

“On the road you have got to take care of the ball,” Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. “A couple of plays here or there and we win the game.”

The win keeps Coffeyville on top in the Jayhawk East as they are now 17-7 overall and 11-1 in the conference. The loss drops Cowley from a tie for second to fourth place in the conference with a record of 14-10 overall and 9-3 in the Jayhawk East.

Yankova was 10-16 from the floor and led Cowley with 23 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Whitney Williams added 20 points, while Bebe Holloway and Gabbie Curtis chipped in with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Coffeyville's Taja Green led all scorers with 29 points, while Lacie Ward hit four three-pointers and finished with 12 points.

Cowley will now prepare to play at Johnson County (17-7 overall, 7-5 Jayhawk East) Wednesday at 5 p.m. The game can be heard on KACY 102.5 FM Arkansas City.
