Cowley women beat Dodge City, lose to Pratt

Playing a pair of Jayhawk West foes, the Cowley College women’s basketball team beat Dodge City and lost to Pratt at the Jayhawk Shootout over the weekend in Coffeyville.

The Lady Tigers opened with a 58-46 win over Dodge City on Saturday, but then suffered a dismal shooting night in a 61-42 loss to Pratt on Sunday.

Against Dodge City, Cowley led 32-21 at the end of the first half and maintained its lead over the final 20 minutes of play as they went on to the 12-point win. Cowley out-shot Dodge City 44 percent to 34 percent in the victory.

Freshman Gabrielle Curtis led Cowley with 11 points and five assists, while Elena Yankova and Bebe Holloway chipped in with 10 points a piece.

Samantha Askew and Dany Ramirez led the Lady Conquistadors with 12 points a piece. Dodge City is now 4-7 on the season.

On Sunday, Cowley fell behind Pratt 9-0 to start the game and trailed 21-11 at the end of the first half. Things did not get any better for the Lady Tigers in the second half as they finished the game shooting just 27.9 percent from the floor.

“We just did not begin the game very well and never got in a rhythm all day,” Cowley head coach Todd Clark said.

Yankova led Cowley with 18 points, while Curtis added 14. Yankova and Curtis combined to make 14-of-27 shots, while the rest of the team went just 3-of-34 from the floor.

Elisabeth Friesen had a monster game for Pratt as she finished with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Pratt out-scored Cowley 23-5 from the free-throw line as they improved to 3-10 on the season.

Cowley, which finishes the first semester with a record of 5-7, will not return to action until Jan. 5 when they host Kansas City at 5 p.m.

“We will try and regroup for the second semester,” Clark said. “We hope to shoot the ball a little better.”
