Lucero named December Student-Athlete of the Month
Fresh off being named Cowley College’s November Student of the
Month, William (Willy) Lucero was recently named the school’s December
Student-Athlete of the Month.
Lucero, a member of the track and field team, is also a Student Ambassador,
Cowley Orientation Captain, Resident Dorm Assistant, and Intramural referee.
Lucero came to Cowley from Royal Valley High School, where he was a member
of the Honor Roll and was awarded the Joel Barta Memorial Scholarship.
He also excelled in athletics as he was the state champion and school-record
holder in the pole vault and was a three-time state qualifier in wrestling.
As a freshman at Cowley, he was a member of the Tigers’ conference
winning indoor and outdoor track and field teams. He helped the Tigers
place eighth at the national indoor and 11th at the national outdoor
championships.
He was the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division and Region VI runner-up
in the pole vault during the outdoor season and placed fourth in the
pole vault at the NJCAA National Outdoor Championships.
Lucero has a personal best vault of 15-4, but hopes to break Brandon
Banda’s school-record of 16-0 3/4.
