Cowley baseball blasts Hutchinson 11-3

Enjoying sunny skies and warm weather, the Cowley College baseball team roughed up Hutchinson Community College by a score of 11-3 Wednesday at City Ball Park.

The Tigers scored all 11 runs in the game’s first five innings of play. Andy Petz’s three-run homer highlighted a six-run second inning. Cowley would add a run in the third inning, and got a run scoring single by Luke Zeller and a sacrifice fly by Petz, that scored Colt Loehrs, to increase its lead to 9-0 after four innings of play.

That would be more than enough run support for Tiger sophomore Calvin Drinnen as he was in complete control on the mound. Drinnen (2-0) allowed just two hits and no runs in four innings pitched. The right-hander struck out five and walked none.

Cowley would get run scoring sacrifice flies from Ryan Hege and Loehrs in the bottom of the fifth as its lead grew to 11-0.

After tossing two scoreless innings of relief, Tiger freshman, Caleb Bass, allowed three runs in the seventh. Only one of the runs in the inning was earned.

Chase Webb relieved Bass with two outs in the seventh inning and pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Sophomore Michael Flanagin struck out two of the four batters he faced as he finished off the game by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

The victory improves Cowley’s record to 5-4 on the season.

Petz finished the game 1-for-2 with four runs batted in, while sophomore third baseman Frank Specht went 2-for-3 with two RBI’s. Robert Thomas also played well and went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and two runs scored, while batting out of the leadoff spot.

Cowley will be back in action Saturday at noon when they play a doubleheader at Eastern Oklahoma. The Tigers will then play a single, nine-inning game, vs. Eastern Oklahoma Sunday at noon.
