Tiger baseball destroys Coffeyville in conference opener

What a way to open conference play! Playing its conference opening doubleheader at Coffeyville on Sunday, the Cowley College baseball team crushed Coffeyville by scores of 14-0 and 24-3.

The victories improve Cowley’s record to 10-5 overall and 2-0 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division.

Sophomore Luke Zeller had a day to remember as he went 6-for-10 with 11 runs batted in in the doubleheader. After going 2-for-4 with three RBI’s in the opener, Zeller went 4-for-6 with two doubles, a triple, and eight RBI’s in the second game.

Cowley needed just five innings to run-rule Coffeyville in game one. The Tigers used an eight-run third inning to blow the game open. Freshman Ryan Hege went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, and three RBI’s. Ronald Melendez also added three hits and two RBI’s while batting in the leadoff spot.

Stephen Kohlscheen (1-1) picked up his first win of the season as he pitched five scoreless innings. Kohlscheen allowed three hits, while striking out six and walking five.

In game two, Cowley scored in every inning but one, and put the game away by scoring 13 runs in the seventh inning. Cowley had 11 hits in the inning, including two hits and three runs batted in from freshman Matt Garcia, who entered the game in the seventh.

Freshmen Robert Thomas and Chance Ross each had four hits in the game and combined for five RBI’s. Freshman B.J. Misialek also played well as he went 3-for-5 with three RBI’s. Cowley had 24 hits in game two and finished with 38 hits and 38 runs in the doubleheader.

Freshman pitcher Zach Cargill improved to 2-0 on the season. Cargill allowed five hits and three runs in four innings pitched. The lefthander struck out six and walked two.

Chase Webb, Travis Weaver, and Trevor Rosenthal combined for three scoreless innings of relief.
Cowley will be back in action Tuesday when they play a doubleheader at Independence at 2 p.m.
