Tigers finish season ranked seventh in final poll
Advancing to the JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Co., the Cowley
College baseball team put together another banner season and finished
ranked seventh in the final NJCAA baseball poll compiled by Allan Simpson/PG
Cross Checker.
The poll ranks the top-50 junior college teams in the country. Howard
College, this year’s JUCO World Series champion, topped the rankings
and was followed by Orange Coast Community College, which was the California
Community College state champion.
During the 2009 season, Cowley captured its third straight Jayhawk East
title and its second Region VI title in the past three years. The Tigers
finished the season with a record of 48-15.
After winning its first game at the JUCO World Series, Cowley suffered
a pair of close defeats to close out its season.
Tiger head coach Dave Burroughs was pleased to find out where his team
finished in the rankings.
“I wish we could have played a few more games, but what the guys did
this season is something to be proud of,” Burroughs said.
Cowley played its best baseball at the end of the season by winning 19
of its final 22 games prior to the JUCO World Series.
“To do what we did late in the season was pretty special,” Burroughs
said.
The Tigers will return 10 pitchers and 10 position players as things
look bright for the 2010 season.
