Cloud County slips past Tiger men’s soccer 2-1

Keegan CorneliusIn a game of few opportunities, Cloud County slipped past one more goal in a 2-1 win over the Cowley College men’s soccer team Wednesday in Arkansas City.

The Tigers managed just two shots on goal in the defeat, while Cloud County managed just four shots.

“It was a very competitive match, we just did not have the speed needed to keep them from possessing the ball,” Cowley head coach Roberto Dos Santos said.

With the game scoreless for the first 35 minutes of play, Cowley College’s Keegan Cornelius (pictured) put Cowley on top 1-0 as he scored his second goal of the season with 9:09 left in the first half. Cale Sasser was credited with the assist.

The Thunderbirds quickly answered as just over four minutes later Nathaniel Potter headed in a corner kick from Omar Diosdado to tie the game 1-1 heading into halftime.

The game would remain tied until midway through the second half when the Thunderbirds’ Alberto Gimeno-Naval beat Tiger goaltender Blake Anderson with what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

The win helps Cloud County remain unbeaten at 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Jayhawk Conference. Cowley is now 1-2 overall and in conference play.

The Tigers will prepare for Saturday’s contest at No. 4-ranked Barton County at 4 p.m. The Cougars are 6-0 on the season.

“We will have to regroup, work on our defensive patterns and how to impose our game,” Dos Santos said.
