Cowley men’s soccer gets hack in the win column

Getting contributions from numerous players, the Cowley College men’s soccer team broke a four-game losing streak with an impressive 6-0 win over Dodge City Wednesday in Arkansas City.

The six goals were more than the team had scored in its first five games.

“We played with a lot of intensity and executed what we have been working on in practice,” Cowley head coach Roberto Dos Santos said. “It was a much needed win.”

Scott Pinney and Diego Mendez tallied first half goals to put Cowley on top 2-0 at halftime. Mendez needed just 43 seconds into the second half to record his second goal of the game, while Nick Sobba added his third goal of the season just seven minutes later.

Keegan Cornelius would cap the scoring by netting a pair of goals. Cornelius now has a team-best four goals on the season.

“We worked together in the back and the midfield to create opportunities up front,” Dos Santos said.

Tiger goaltender Mark Vargas recorded his first shutout of the season as he stopped all eight shots he faced. Cornelius, Mendez, Sobba, Jesse Lovelace, and Dillon Moore each had an assist in the victory.

The win improves Cowley’s record to 2-4 overall and 2-3 in the Jayhawk Conference. The Conquistadors are now 0-5-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the conference.

After playing three games in five days, the Tigers will have some time off before hosting Barclay College Tuesday at 7 p.m.

“The time off will give us a chance to work on things we have learned from the past couple of games,” Dos Santos said.
