Bacchi’s overtime goal lifts Tigers to third straight win

Joao BacchiScoring on a penalty kick, Brazilian freshman Joao Bacchi lifted the Cowley College men’s soccer team to a 3-2 overtime win at Neosho County on Saturday.

The victory was the Tigers’ third in a row, and first of the season on the road.

“The guys were excited, winning on the road was big,” Cowley head coach Roberto Dos Santos said.

The goal was Bacchi’s second of the game, and came after the Tigers’ Nick Sobba was pushed in the back while going up for a header in the box. Bacchi’s first goal gave Cowley a 2-1 lead 14:21 into the second half.

“He had missed some opportunities earlier this season, so this was big for him,” Dos Santos said.
Keegan Cornelius scored his team-leading seventh goal to help Cowley to a 1-0 halftime lead. The Panthers’ Alex Cimmara scored two second half goals to force overtime.

Tiger goalkeeper Blake Anderson stopped four shots as Cowley improved to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the Jayhawk Conference. Jesse Lovelace assisted on the goal by Cornelius.

Neosho County is now 2-10-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the conference.

Cowley will attempt to continue its winning streak when they play at Kansas City Wednesday at 1 p.m. The Blue Devils are 7-6 overall and 4-2 in the conference.

“It will be another tough conference game, I hope we can take advantage of the momentum we have created for ourselves,” Dos Santos said.
