Lady Tigers roll to 73-37 win over Lady Red Devils

Gabrielle CurtisScoring the first 11 points of Wednesday night’s game vs. Allen County, the Cowley College women’s basketball team coasted to a 73-37 home win over the Lady Red Devils.

Cowley shot 64 percent from the floor in building a commanding 41-18 halftime lead.

The Lady Tigers would keep up their intensity in the second half as their lead continued to grow. Cowley held Allen County to 27.7 percent shooting and forced the Lady Red Devils into 27 turnovers.

“I think we have been pretty solid defensively, we just have not been able to put points on the board to help ourselves,” Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. “Our focus is on the offensive end, it is critical for us to be more balanced.”

Cowley got the balance they were hoping for on Wednesday as they had four players score in double figures. Elena Yankova made 10-14 shots and finished with a game-high 21 points, while Bebe Holloway added 14 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals.

“Elena shot the ball well and Bebe had a really good night,” Clark said.

Sophomore point guard Gabbie Curtis added 14 points and nine assists, and Whitney Williams made 5-of-6 shot attempts to finish with 10 points, five rebounds and five assists.

The victory was Cowley’s second in a row and improves the Lady Tigers’ record to 14-7 overall and 5-4 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. Cowley is currently tied for fifth place in the conference with Independence, one-game behind third place Fort Scott and Johnson County.

Sumayyah Muhammad led Allen County with 11 points. The Lady Red Devils remain winless in the conference, as they are 3-18 overall and 0-9 in the Jayhawk East.

Cowley will host Highland Saturday at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Scotties are 8-13 overall and 1-8 in the conference.

“Saturday’s game will be a chance for us to improve and execute our game plan better,” Clark said. “It will be a good challenge for us.”
