Three Lady Tiger sophomores named all-conference

Elena YankovaLed by sophomore forward Elena Yankova being named a first-team all-conference performer, the Cowley College women’s basketball team had three players receive recognition on the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division All-Conference Team.

Yankova, a 6-foot sophomore from Sofia, Bulgaria, is the second leading scorer in the Jayhawk East with an average of 17.1 points per game. She was joined on the all-conference team by Lady Tiger sophomores Gabbie Curtis and Bebe Holloway.

Both Curtis and Holloway were named second-team all-conference performers. Curtis, a 5-foot-8 point guard from Ganado, AZ, averages 12.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists. While, Holloway, a 5-foot-10 forward from Houston, Texas, averages 14.3 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 4.3 steals per game.

The three sophomores have helped Cowley win 12 games in a row and post a record of 24-7.

“We are happy for them and are glad they got recognized for the things they have done for us,” Cowley head coach Todd Clark said.

Leondra Doomes-Stephens was named the Jayhawk East Most Valuable Player as she led the conference in scoring with an average of 21.7 points per game. She also averaged 8.5 rebounds per contest.

Labette Community College head coach Jamie Green was named the Jayhawk East Coach of the Year as she led Labette to a second place finish in the conference. While, Independence Community College’s Sadie Webb was tabbed as the conference’s Freshman of the Year. Webb averages 16.3 points and 5.0 rebounds.

The Lady Tiger basketball team will face Hutchinson in the second-round of the Region VI Tournament played Friday at 1 p.m. at Wichita State University’s Koch Arena.
