Lady Tigers open with 79-38 win, prepare to host No. 10-ranked Connors State
Scoring the first 10 points and leading 23-3 less than 10 minutes into
the game, the No. 30-ranked Cowley College women’s basketball team
won its season-opener against the Bethany College JV by a score of 79-38
Monday night at W.S. Scott Auditorium.
Cowley got 11 first half points from sophomore Elena Yankova as they
built a 40-20 halftime lead. The Lady Tigers would score the first eight
points of the second half, as they were never threatened in the 41-point
win.
“It was a good group effort, we had a lot of players contribute,” Cowley
head coach Todd Clark said. “We will try to evaluate and get better each
time out.”
Sophomore forward Bebe Holloway led all scorers with 19 points, while
point guard Dominique English added 15 points in her first game in a
Tiger uniform. English, who transferred to Cowley from Daytona Beach
Community College, also added several assists.
Gabbie Curtis chipped in 14 points, while Yankova finished with 13.
The Lady Swedes failed to have a player score in double figures as Chelsea
Reherman and Devon Stover led Bethany with seven points apiece.
Cowley, which is now 1-0 on the season, will host No. 10-ranked Connors
State College Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Connors State finished with a record
of 28-5 last season.
“This will be a great test for us,” Clark said. “They have
a large group of sophomores and are similar to us in that respect.”
