Cowley women beat Garden City for fifth straight win

Leading Garden City by only four points (31-27) at the end of the first half, the Cowley College women’s basketball team opened the second half on a 13-3 run en route to a 61-40 victory Thursday at W.S. Scott Auditorium.

Cowley trailed by as many as seven points (21-14) midway through the first half before rallying to take the four-point lead into halftime. Bebe Holloway sparked Cowley’s 13-3 run to start the second half by scoring 11 straight points for the Lady Tigers.

“Bebe is capable of doing those type of things,” Cowley head coach Todd Clark said.

Holloway, who is having a terrific start to the season, finished with 19 points, 14 rebounds and five steals. For the season, she is averaging 17.6 points, 11 rebounds, and 5.6 steals per game.

“She can actually play better than she is playing, so that is something we are looking forward to,” Clark said.

The Lady Tigers held Garden City to 20 percent shooting in the second half as they outscored the Lady Broncbusters 30-13 over the game’s final 20 minutes of play.

“The pace in the first half was in favor of Garden City, but the second half we got ourselves going and made them work for their shots,” Clark said.

Sophomore forward Elena Yankova finished with 18 points, six rebounds and six assists, while Dominique English added 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Katie Novack was the lone Garden City player to score in double figures as she finished with 16 points on 5-of-14 shooting.

The victory was Cowley’s fifth in a row and improves the Lady Tigers’ record to 6-1 on the season. The loss drops Garden City to 6-4.

Cowley will be back in action Saturday when they play at Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa at 5 p.m. The Lady Tigers defeated NOC 78-52 Nov. 10 in Arkansas City.

“We are going to have to forget about the game we played against them at home because they are always tough at their place,” Clark said. “We hope to go there and have a good outing.”
