Lady Tigers beat NOC 65-52 for sixth straight win
Despite shooting only 35 percent from the floor, the Cowley College women’s
basketball team forced Northern Oklahoma College into 28 turnovers in
a 65-52 win Saturday in Tonkawa, Okla.
Cowley also out-rebounded the Lady Mavericks by 13 (41-28) as they won
their sixth straight game and improved to 7-1 on the season.
“We did not shoot particularly well, but we were able to get some turnovers
and out-rebounded them by quite a bit,” Cowley head coach Todd Clark
said.
Cowley led 30-22 at the end of the first half and were able to maintain
the lead in the second half thanks to a big game from sophomore Elena
Yankova, who finished with 21 points. Yankova made 7-of-11 shots from
the floor, including making all three of her three-point attempts and
all four of her shots from the free-throw line.
‘Elena was probably the one player that shot the ball at a high percentage,
she was big for us,” Clark said.
Bebe Holloway made just 5-of-18 shots from the floor, but finished with
16 points, 16 rebounds and seven steals.
“She struggled to make shots but did a lot of other good things for us,” Clark
said.
Point guard Dominique English added 15 points, five rebounds, three assists
and three steals.
The Lady Tigers will now prepare to take part in the Garden City Classic
on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, Cowley will play Garden City at 5:30
p.m. The Lady Tigers will then face 14th-ranked Seward Community College
Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
“With the long bus ride and Thanksgiving there are a lot of factors that
will make it tough for us,” Clark said. “This will be a big weekend
and be a test for us.”
