Lady Tigers’ blast Butler 57-34

Holding the Butler Community College Lady Grizzlies to 27.7 percent shooting, the Cowley College women’s basketball team defeated the Lady Grizzlies 57-34 Sunday at the Jayhawk Shootout in Coffeyville.

Cowley held Butler to 10 first half points as they led 20-10 after 20 minutes of play. The Lady Tigers’ shot 73.7 percent in the second half as they blew the game open. For the game, Cowley shot 59 percent.

“When you shoot that high of a percentage you are doing something right,” Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. “I also thought we locked in quite a bit better defensively.”

Sophomore Elena Yankova led Cowley with a game-high 22 points on 11-of-15 shooting. Gabbie Curtis, chipped in 11 points, while Whitney Williams added seven points and eight rebounds.

Butler was led by Angie Criner’s 12 points and five steals. The Lady Grizzlies are now 8-6 on the season.
After finishing 1-1 at the Jayhawk Shootout, Cowley wraps up its non-conference slate with a record of 9-3. The Lady Tigers’ three losses have come to teams with a combined record of 31-3.

“We feel we lost to three good teams, but we would like to get on their level,” Clark said. “We will look to do better next semester and be more consistent on offense.”

Cowley was originally scheduled to host Eastern Oklahoma College Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. However, the Lady Tigers will not be the opponent as Eastern Oklahoma will take on the Kansas Wesleyan University JV Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at W.S. Scott Auditorium.

The Tiger men’s game vs. Eastern Oklahoma College will follow at 7:30 p.m.

The Lady Tigers will return to action Jan. 3 when they open conference play at Highland at 1 p.m. The game can be heard on KACY 102.5 FM Arkansas City.
