Lady Tiger soccer wins again, beats Cloud County 4-0

Ana BorjasGetting two goals a piece from Amber Hernandez and Carol Rodrigues, the Cowley College women’s soccer team defeated Cloud County 4-0 Wednesday in Arkansas City.

Rodrigues has now scored four goals on the season, while Hernandez has a nation leading 12 goals. Hernandez assisted on the first goal, and defenseman Ana Borjas (pictured) assisted on both of Hernandez’s goals.

On the first goal, Rodrigues got behind a Lady Thunderbird defender and beat goaltender Kadie Kutschka to the loose ball, before dribbling around her and blasting a shot into the net with 29:43 left in the first half.

Cowley benefited from some sloppy play in goal by Kutschka to increase its lead to 3-0 before halftime. With 5:57 remaining before half, Hernandez put a shot on goal that Kutschka mishandled and allowed to fall into the net.

A little over four minutes later, Rodrigues scored on a free kick from about 30 yards out as the ball skipped past Kutschka, giving Cowley a 3-0 lead.

The Lady Tigers were in total control in the second half and put the game away on Hernandez’s second goal with 18:08 remaining.

“It was a great win, we were able to capitalize on their mistakes,” Cowley head coach Roberto Dos Santos said. “Still, we need to capitalize on the other opportunities we get.”

Cowley has recorded shutouts in each of its three wins, having outscored its opponents 14-0 in the three games. The Lady Tigers are now 3-2 overall and in the conference. Cloud County drops to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Cowley goalkeeper Carly Budd needed to make just two saves as the Lady Tigers had 13 more shots on goal than the Lady Thunderbirds.

“Our defenders are doing a good job of holding the line and making things easier for our goalkeeper,” Dos Santos said.

The Lady Tigers will prepare for Saturday’s contest at Barton County at 2 p.m. The Lady Cougars are 4-2 on the season.

“It will be a good match up, they have a good recruiting class and depth,” Dos Santos said.
