Hernandez does it again, Lady Tiger soccer wins 6-0Katie Ybarra

For the second time this season freshman forward Amber Hernandez scored five goals in leading the Cowley College women’s soccer team to a 6-0 win over Dodge City Wednesday in Arkansas City.

Hernandez scored five goals against Allen County on Sept. 8, and had a hat trick against Independence on Sept. 4. She now has 18 goals in seven games. In this one, she had an astounding 14 shots on goal.

“She was very consistent and had extra help from her teammates,” Cowley head coach Roberto Dos Santos said. “It was an uplifting win.”

The Lady Tigers got a goal from Hernandez less than 10 minutes into the contest to lead 1-0. Hernandez missed a penalty kick, but scored on the put back. That would be all the scoring in the first half.

Hernandez would add a pair of goals in the first 16:29 of the second half to increase Cowley’s lead to 3-0. The Lady Tigers would pour on three more goals in a span of two minutes and 26 seconds as they coasted to the 6-0 win.

Along with Hernandez’s five goals, Allyson Duda scored her first goal of the season. Carol Rodrigues added two assists, while Viri Sanchez also had an assist in the win.

Monica Vega returned to the Lady Tiger lineup after missing the past five games due to a concussion suffered in the season opener.

“Getting Monica back helps our depth a lot,” Dos Santos said.

Carly Budd saved all seven shots against her as she recorded her fourth shutout of the season. Cowley is now 4-3 overall and in the Jayhawk Conference. Dodge City falls to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

The Lady Tigers will be back in action Saturday when they play at Butler Community College at 2 p.m. The Lady Grizzlies are 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the Jayhawk Conference.

“It’s going to be a tough game, they are one of the best teams in the conference,” Dos Santos said.
