Tiger baseball falls flat in 8-5 loss to Hutchinson
Playing just its second game of the season Wednesday at home vs. Hutchinson,
the Cowley College baseball team did not look sharp in losing to the
Blue Dragons 8-5.
Tiger sophomore Zach Cargill started on the mound and was uncharacteristically
wild as he walked two batters and hit a batter in the top of the first
inning. The Tiger defense did not do their pitcher any favors as they
committed three errors, which allowed all three base runners to come
around to score.
Cargill (0-1) settled down after the first inning and allowed no hits
in his three innings of work, but left with the Tigers trailing 3-1.
With Hutchinson leading 4-2, the Blue Dragons scored three runs in the
top of the seventh inning to increase its lead to 7-2. The runs turned
out to be big as Cowley’s Matt Hillis belted a three-run homer
in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the score 7-5.
Tiger pitchers walked the first four batters in the top of the ninth
inning, allowing Hutchinson to make the final score 8-5.
All totaled, Cowley pitchers waked 11 batters. The Tigers also committed
five errors and their hitters struck out a combined 14 times.
“It wasn’t a good day all around, we were bad in all three phases,” Cowley
head coach Dave Burroughs said. “We will try to put this behind us and
move forward. It’s too early to push the panic button.”
Sophomore Mace Krol homered in the win for Hutchinson, while redshirt
sophomore Matthew Williams earned the win.
Cowley will be back in action today when they host Butler Community College
at 2 p.m. The Tigers are now 1-1 on the season.
