Cowley uses team effort to blast Labette 82-57
Posting five players in double figures and getting scoring from 11 players,
the Cowley College men’s basketball team picked up its third
straight win with an 82-57 victory over Labette Monday at W.S. Scott
Auditorium.
Cowley used a 22-0 run that was capped by back-to-back dunks by Lance
Russell and Dominick Cornelius to lead 26-3 with 8:20 left in the first
half. The Tigers’ lead would grow to 36-9 following a basket by
Julio Rosario and Cowley would go into halftime with a 43-21 advantage.
The Tigers would lead by as many as 29 points on two separate occasions
in the second half and Labette never got any closer than within 22 points
of the lead.
The win improves Cowley’s record to 12-7 overall and 6-1 in the
Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division.
“This was a good team victory,” Cowley head coach Tommy DeSalme
said. “Overall, our bench and team energy was good.”
Russell scored 11 of his team-high 13 points in the first half, while
Tyrus McGee made up for a poor shooting night (5-of-17) to still finish
with 12 points, seven assists and five rebounds.
Freshman Kelton Marshall had one of his best performances of the season
as he finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and six blocked shots.
Cornelius added 10 points and five rebounds, and Jordan Lankster came
off the bench to hit all four of his shots from the floor and finish
with a season-high 10 points.
“We had different people step up and Jordan showed signs of how athletic
he is,” DeSalme said.
Garland McArthur led Labette with 20 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Cardinals are now 6-11 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
Labette shot just 28.8 percent and turned the ball over 19 times in the
defeat.
Cowley, which is in a tie with Neosho County (5-0 Jayhawk East) for first
place in the conference, will look to stay atop the conference standings
when they play at Fort Scott Wednesday at 8 p.m. The Greyhounds are 3-14
overall and 0-5 in the Jayhawk East.
Although Fort Scott is only 2-7 at home, five of the seven losses have
been by seven points or fewer.
“They are always tough at home,” DeSalme said.
Wednesday’s game can be heard on KSOK Radio 95.9 FM.
