Early in the season goals have been hard to come by for the Cowley College
men’s soccer team. Saturday’s game in Arkansas City was no
exception as the Tigers came up on the short end of a 3-1 loss to Metropolitan
Community College-Blue River.
After scoring three goals in its season opening double overtime tie against
Allen County Community College, the Tigers have scored just one goal
in the past two games.
“We are creating opportunities but the bottom line is we are not finding
the back of the net,” Cowley head coach Roberto Dos Santos said.
On Saturday, Cowley fell behind 1-0 as the Trail Blazers got an unassisted
goal from Sam Braverman nine minutes into the contest. Cowley was able
to tie the game at 1-1 on freshman Walisson Gomes’ first goal of
the season with 16:41 left in the opening half as Keegan Cornelius assisted
on the goal.
MCC-Blue River regained a 2-1 lead on Yacine Hamchaoui’s goal with
6:29 remaining in the first half and iced the game with a goal by Zane
Christenson with 10:33 left to play.
Cowley goalkeeper Blake Anderson made four saves in the defeat. The Tigers
are now 0-2-1 on the season.
Cowley will take to the road to play at Dodge City Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Dodge City is 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the Jayhawk East. Cowley finished
in a tie against Allen County in its lone conference game of the season.
Cowley freshman Lucas Coelho will return to the team after missing the
past two games due to a red card in the squad’s first game of the
season. Nathan Modesto is also expected to return to the lineup after
missing Saturday’s game due to a leg injury.
“We need to get that first win at Dodge City on Wednesday,” Dos
Santos said. “We will look to bounce back, we have the material to do
well.”
