Soccer loses to No. 11-ranked Garden City

Going through the toughest stretch of its conference schedule, the Cowley College men’s soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss at No. 11-ranked Garden City on Wednesday.

The Tigers have faced two of the conference’s top teams (Barton County and Garden City) in their past two games.

On Wednesday, the game was scoreless for the first 40 minutes until Garden City’s D.J. Zuniga’s goal with 4:25 left in the first half. The score would stay 1-0 until late in the game. However, Garden City would score two goals within a little over two minutes of each other to win 3-0.

The Broncbusters got second half goals from Federico Agreda and Tareq Al-Lugman as they improved to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

“This was a great opportunity for us to match up with a really good team and see where we are,” Cowley head coach Roberto Dos Santos said. “It was good to see the way we fought and kept with them the whole game.”

Sophomore goalie Blake Anderson stopped eight shots in the defeat. Cowley is now 0-5-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the Jayhawk Conference.

The Tigers will now have a week off before playing at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Wednesday at 4 p.m. The Norsemen are 1-6 on the season.

Cowley will use the time off to get some players healthy.

“The time off is going to be vital for us because we have been nagged with injuries,” Dos Santos said. “Every game counts and that’s the way we are going to approach the rest of the season.”
