Cowley men’s soccer makes it two in a row

Joao BacchiGoing winless in its first six games, the Cowley College men’s soccer team is making up for lost time as they picked up its second victory in a row with a 1-0 win over Kansas City Saturday in Arkansas City.

Kansas City entered the contest with a 5-0-1 record in the region, while Cowley was just 1-5-1. However, the Tigers were coming off their first win of the season on Wednesday and played with a new found confidence.

Cowley played a strong game as they out-shot Kansas City 20-5. After a scoreless first 75 minutes of play, the Tigers were finally able to break through on the scoreboard as Lucas Coelho scored off an assist from Dayton Rodrigues with 13:51 remaining. Coelho blasted a shot from 20 yards out into the bottom right hand corner of the goal.

“Lucas had a tremendous game for us,” Dos Santos said. “We came out strong as a team and took control of the game from the first minute on.”

Cowley goalkeeper Blake Anderson needed to make only two saves in recording his first shutout of the season as the Tiger defenders played an exceptional game.

“We are definitely playing more consistent defensively and not having as many lapses,” Dos Santos said. “It was a very good defensive effort.”

Dos Santos was also pleased with the play of midfielders/forwards Keegan Cornelius, Walisson Gomes, and Joao Bacchi.

Cowley will look to extend its winning streak to three games when they play at Coffeyville Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Red Ravens are 5-6 overall and 3-4 in the Jayhawk Conference. Starting with the game at Coffeyville, the Tigers will play four games in six days.

“We have a tough, marathon of games ahead of us,” Dos Santos said. “We need to keep being consistent and finish the opportunities we are creating. We will need to work hard at Coffeyville to win because it won’t come to us for free.”
