Tiger men beat Coffeyville for third straight win

Continuing its dramatic turnaround, the Cowley College men’s soccer team picked up its third consecutive win with a 2-0 victory at Coffeyville on Tuesday.

corneliusThe thee-game-winning streak comes on the heels of a six-game winless streak to open the season. The Tigers have out-scored their opponents 8-2 over the past three games.

“The great thing about this team is they believe in this group,” Cowley head coach Roberto Dos Santos said. “Through the adversity we faced earlier in the season the guys have formed better unity.”

On Tuesday, Cowley got a first half goal from Nathan Modesto, his second of the year, and led 1-0 at the end of the first 45 minutes of play. The Tigers would get their second goal just 2:37 into the second half as sophomore Keegan Cornelius would score his first goal of the season.

Cornelius led Cowley with 12 goals as a freshman, so this goal seemed to be a long time coming.

“He has been unlucky on some opportunities (to score) this season, so I am sure this will help his confidence,” Dos Santos said.

Cowley goalkeeper Blake Anderson recorded his second straight shutout as he stopped all seven shots he faced, while Dayton Rodrigues assisted on both goals.

The victory improves the Tigers’ record to 3-5-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the Jayhawk Conference. Cowley is currently seventh in the conference with seven team points. Coffeyville is now 5-8 overall and sixth in the conference with a record of 3-5.

Cowley will have a good opportunity to run its winning streak to four games when they play at Independence Thursday at 4 p.m. The Pirates have lost all 11 games they have played this season and have been outscored by an incredible 78-3 margin.

“We will not underestimate anyone, we have got to go out and play as strong and consistent as we have been,” Dos Santos said.
