Tiger men’s tennis team returns to action
Having opened its season at the University of Arkansas on Feb. 7, the
Cowley College men’s tennis team returned to the court for the
first time in nearly two weeks when they played at NCAA Division II
Drury University in Springfield, MO. on Friday.
Although the Tigers lost the match by a score of 8-1, Cowley head coach
Josh Cobble thought his players represented themselves well against the
Panthers.
“Everyone fought pretty hard, I definitely thought we got better,” Cobble
said. “To be able to get this kind of experience is big for us.”
Cowley’s lone win came from its No. 1 doubles team of Lloyd Bruce-Burgess
and Joan Valls as the Tiger duo outlasted Drury’s Roman Gonda and
Lukas Zeilen 9-8 in a tiebreaker.
Cobble also thought the Tigers’ No. 2 doubles team of Renato Mendes
and Felipe Pimenta performed well in their 8-6 loss to the Panthers’ Jesus
San Roman and Antonio Garcia Santos.
“I think that was the best match that Renato and Felipe have played together,” Cobble
said. “I feel pretty good about our doubles lineup.”
In singles play, sophomore Roger White battled hard before losing to
Roman Gonda 3-6, 6-7 in No. 2 singles.
“Roger stepped up and played a good match,” Cobble said.
Cowley will continue to face stiff competition in the early season when
they play at the University of Missouri Kansas City Wednesday at 1 p.m.
“They will be a tough team, but we will just go out and play,” Cobble
said.
