Cowley tennis continues to face tough competition
Facing its second NCAA Division I opponent in three matches, the No.
5-ranked Cowley College men’s tennis team took on the University
of Missouri Kansas City Wednesday in Kansas City, MO.
The Tigers found wins hard to come by as they lost 8-1. Still, Cowley
head coach Josh Cobble thought his team battled hard and gained something
by playing the match against a UMKC team that finished first in the Summit
League in 2009 and tied the school record for victories with 14.
“I was pretty happy with the way we played, every match we were right
there, we just are still looking to capitalize on the opportunities we get,” Cobble
said. “UMKC is a tough team and one of the best in their conference each
year.”
Cowley’s win came from sophomore Lloyd Bruce-Burgess at No. 1 singles.
After winning a hard fought first set over the Kangaroos’ Bret
Berryman by a score of 7-6, Bruce-Burgess won the second set 6-1.
The Tigers nearly picked up another win at No. 6 singles as freshman
Alex Dickson won his first set against UMKC’s Erwin Quintanilla
6-4 before dropping the next two sets in heartbreaking fashion, 6-7,
8-10.
“That was a great match for Alex against a good opponent,” Cobble
said. “Hopefully, this will help give him confidence for the rest of
the year.”
Cowley will be back in action Friday when they play at Oklahoma Christian
University at 6 p.m. OCU is ranked in the top-10 of the NAIA rankings.
“We will need to go out and play well and keep trying to capitalize on
the opportunities we create in the match,” Cobble said. “They will
be a tough opponent but it is a match we can be competitive in.”
