Tiger tennis team battles hard in loss at OCU

Going up against one of the top NAIA tennis programs in the country, the Cowley College men’s tennis team fought hard in a 6-3 loss to Oklahoma Christian University Friday in Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma Christian, which is currently seventh in the NAIA rankings, made just enough plays to get by the Tigers, who were playing without sophomore Roger White, who normally plays No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles for the team. White stayed back in Arkansas City due to an illness.

“Not having Roger was a big loss for us, but it was encouraging to see we were still able to compete really well,” Cowley head coach Josh Cobble said.

Sophomore Lloyd Bruce-Burgess picked up his second straight win at No. 1 singles as he rallied from a 1-6 loss of the first set to defeat Oklahoma Christian’s Martin Poboril 1-6, 7-5, 10-6.

“Lloyd adjusted his play after that first set and was a little bit more aggressive in taking the net away from his opponent, which slowed his opponent down a bit,” Cobble said. “That was a great win for Lloyd against a huge hitter.”

Bruce-Burgess also teamed with Joan Valls to defeat Poboril and Etienne Leite 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. While, Cowley’s other win came from freshman Tom Gibaud at No. 6 singles. Gibaud played well in defeating the Eagles’ Chase Miller 6-3, 6-4.

“That was a big win for Tom against a really good player,” Cobble said.

Cowley will return to action on Thursday when they play at Hesston College. The Tigers will face Hesston at 9 a.m. and will then take on Bethel College at 1 p.m.

After facing four high caliber opponents to open the season, Cobble is looking forward to taking a bit of a step down in its level of competition.

“We should play well against those teams and come back with some well deserved wins,” Cobble said.
