Tiger men’s tennis dominates in wins over Hesston and Bethel

Having already played two NCAA Division I schools, one NCAA Division I opponent, and one of the top teams in the NAIA rankings, the No. 5-ranked Cowley College men’s tennis team took advantage of its opportunity to play a pair of lower tier teams Thursday in Hesston.

The experience of playing a tough early season schedule looked to pay off as Cowley dominated both Hesston College and Bethel College by scores of 9-0.

“I think playing those tough teams early on really helped us a lot,” Cowley head coach Josh Cobble said. “It was nice to get a couple of wins.”

Against Hesston, Cowley did not lose a game in two of its three doubles matches, and four of its six singles matches. The Tigers were equally impressive against Bethel as they did not lose a set in either match.

“Overall, it was a pretty good day,” Cobble said.

Cowley will be back in action Saturday when they play at Baker University at 3 p.m.

“This is another match we should be able to win if we play up to our capability,” Cobble said.

DOUBLES

  • No. 1 — Lloyd Bruce-Burgess/Joan Valls (CC) defeated Alex Roth/Aaron Peak (Hesston) 8-0.
  • No. 2 — Renato Mendes/Felipe Pimenta (CC) defeated Ryan Wengerd/Taylor Nobel (Hesston) 8-6.
  • No. 3 — Roger White/Alex Dickson (CC) defeated Caleb Wheeler/Adam Weaver (Hesston) 8-0.

SINGLES

  • No. 1 — Bruce-Burgess (CC) defeated Wengerd (Hesston) 6-0, 6-0.
  • No. 2 — Mendes (CC) defeated Peak (Hesston) 6-1, 6-1.
  • No. 3 — White (CC) defeated Nobel (Hesston) 6-0, 6-0.
  • No. 4 — Pimenta (CC) defeated Roth (Hesston) 6-0, 6-0.
  • No. 5 — Valls (CC) defeated Wheeler (Hesston) 6-0, 6-0.
  • No. 6 — Tom Gibaud (CC) defeated Weaver (Hesston) 6-0, 6-1.
