Tiger men’s tennis team has no problem beating Baker

Building off its first wins of the season Thursday at Hesston, the No. 5-ranked Cowley College men’s tennis team defeated Baker University 9-0 Saturday in Baldwin City.
“Everyone did a good job and were in control of their matches,” Cowley head coach Josh Cobble said.
Cowley has won its last three matches by a combined score of 27-0. Sophomore Renato Mendes was the only Tiger tennis player to be pushed to a third set as he rallied from a 6-2 loss of the first set of his No. 2 singles match vs. Baker’s Drew Richter, to win 2-6, 6-3, 10-2.
“Renato had to battle through his match a little bit but finished strong,” Cobble said.
Samir Haikal, a sophomore transfer from Cypress College in California, took advantage of his first action of the season by defeating Baker’s Jared Kurtz 6-2, 6-0 in No. 6 singles play.
Cobble hopes to use Wednesday’s home match vs. Friends University at 2 p.m. as a tune-up before playing at Wichita State University Thursday at 3 p.m.
“The match with Friends will give a few guys a chance to get a match in,” Cobble said. “We hope to get some confidence before heading to WSU on Thursday.”
