Tiger tennis team puts up a fight against WSU

Facing off against former Tiger head coach Brad Louderback and his Wichita State University men’s tennis team Thursday at Wichita’s Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex, the Cowley College Tigers had some solid performances in the match against the Shockers.

Although Cowley did not win the match, the Tigers got a win from its No. 1 doubles team and had two singles matches go three sets before losing super tiebreakers.

The match was played in chilly weather conditions. Cowley is now 4-6 including matches played in the fall.

Cowley head coach Josh Cobble thought his team gave a good showing against a Wichita State squad, which is now 8-3 on the season.

“It was a good day overall,” Cobble said. “We had some guys step up and play some great matches against tough competition.”

The Tigers’ No. 1 doubles team of Lloyd Bruce-Burgess and Joan Valls defeated Wichita State’s Valentin Mihai and Sven Kasper 8-5. The duo was able to pull away after having the match tied at 3-3.

“They did a good job of being aggressive and taking control of the net,” Cobble said.

Sophomore Roger White came back from dropping the first set of his match against the Shockers’ Valentin Mihai to force a third set before losing 3-6, 6-3, 6-10.

“Roger had a couple of tough breaks in the tiebreaker but he came back in the match to make a good showing,” Cobble said.

Bruce-Burgess also went three sets in his No. 1 singles match vs. David Cavalcanti before losing 6-3, 4-6, 6-10. Another bright spot in the defeat was the play of No. 4 singles player Felipe Pimenta, who played well in a 4-6, 4-6 loss to Wichita State’s Sven Kasper.

“That was probably the best match I have seen Felipe play this year,” Cobble said.

Cowley will have some time off over Spring Break before returning to action March 22 at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, MO.

“It was good for us to play another tough match before Spring Break,” Cobble said. “Hopefully we will come back from the break rejuvenated and ready to go.”

Louderback is in his third season at Wichita State University and in his first year as the Director of Operations for the Sheldon Coleman Shocker Tennis Complex. The Arkansas City native coached at Cowley during the 2006 and 2007 seasons.
