Cowley men’s tennis blasts Emporia State, falls to Washburn
Playing without its top player, Lloyd Bruce-Burgess, the No. 5-ranked
Cowley College men’s tennis team had other players pick up the
slack as they took on a pair of NCAA Division II schools Tuesday in
Emporia.
Opening against Washburn, Cowley lost by a score of 6-3. However, the
Tigers came back to beat Emporia State University 7-2.
After losing two of three doubles matches vs. Emporia State, the Tigers
dominated singles play by winning all six matches. Having beaten Emporia
State by the same score a year ago, Cowley head coach Josh Cobble thought
his team may have entered the match a little over confident.
“We started off slow with our doubles teams but really stepped up our
play in singles,” Cobble said. “I think we kind of expected to
cruise a bit, but regrouped and did a nice job of taking care of business.”
Along with its entire singles lineup picking up wins, Cowley got a win
from the No. 1 doubles team of Renato Mendes and Felipe Pimenta.
Kevin Schoon, son of Cowley College Natural Science Department Chair,
Michelle Schoon, teamed with Spencer Pozek to defeat the Tigers’ Roger
White and Alex Dickson 9-7 in No. 2 doubles play.
However, White and Dickson fared better against Washburn by beating Branden
Joost and Ryan Ward 8-0. Joan Valls moved up to play No. 1 singles and
went 2-0 on the day, while White went 2-0 at No. 2 singles.
“Those were great wins for them,” Cobble said. “They stepped
up and helped us fill those spots in our lineup.”
Cowley will now turn its focus to this weekend’s Seminole (OK)
Junior College Invitational where they will face three teams ranked in
the top-five of the national poll. On Friday, Cowley will play No. 3-ranked
Collin College at noon before facing No. 4-ranked Seminole Junior College
later that day at 4 p.m.
On Saturday, the Tigers will play No. 25-ranked Barton County at 9 a.m.
and No. 1-ranked Tyler Junior College at 1 p.m.
“We will need to play tough,” Cobble said. “I hope we play
to our potential. If so, we should be right in the mix with those teams.”
