Tiger men’s tennis team battles four ranked opponents

Playing four teams ranked in the top-25, three of which were ranked amongst the top-four schools in the nation, the No. 5-ranked Cowley College men’s tennis team went 1-3 at the Seminole (OK) Junior College Invitational played Friday and Saturday in Seminole, OK.

Cowley opened the Invite with a 8-1 loss to No. 3-ranked Collin County Community College, before suffering a 7-2 defeat to No. 4-ranked Seminole Junior College on Friday.

The Tigers came back to play two strong matches on Saturday as they defeated Region VI opponent Barton County, which was ranked 25th in the latest poll, by a score of 8-1. Cowley would then take on No. 1-ranked Tyler Junior College and gave the top-ranked team all they could handle before losing 6-3.

Cowley head coach Josh Cobble thought his team performed well despite the final outcome.

“Some of the scores don’t show how competitive the matches really were,” Cobble said. “We lost some tough three setters that could have made a difference in a couple of the matches.”

Cobble was not as concerned with his team’s record over the weekend as he was with getting an opportunity to play some of the top teams in the nation.

“I think this weekend really showed everybody on the team that we can be competitive with those schools, and it showed us where we need to improve,” Cobble said. “Even though we went just 1-3, we left there with a pretty positive outlook for the rest of the season.”

Leading the way for the Tigers was the play of its No. 3 doubles team as Roger White and Alex Dickson went 3-1 on the weekend.

“Roger and Alex had a great weekend and had big wins against the doubles teams of Tyler and Seminole,” Cobble said.

Cowley will host Friends University Wednesday at 2 p.m. before playing at Johnson County on Thursday.
“The match against Friends will give us an opportunity to get some guys some matches in that have not had an opportunity to play much,” Cobble said.
