Tiger men’s tennis team completes sweep of Region VI opponents
Defeating Johnson County 6-3 Thursday in Overland Park, the No. 5-ranked
Cowley College men’s tennis team ran its record to a perfect
4-0 against Region VI schools heading into next weekend’s Region
VI Tournament in Wichita.
Cowley has now defeated Johnson County, Barton County, Seward County,
and Hesston College by a combined score of 32-4. Tiger head coach Josh
Cobble was happy to see his team knock off the defending Region VI champion
Cavaliers.
“Winning on the road is always tougher so it was good to get the win
against the defending region champions and set the tone for next weekend,” Cobble
said. “I hope playing a tough match like this will give us the mindset
to go out and fight hard for every single point at the region tournament.”
Cowley won two of three doubles matches and four of six singles matches
on Thursday. Lloyd Bruce-Burgess and Alex Dickson shined in singles play
with each player dropping just one game in their two sets of play.
Last season, Cowley finished third behind Johnson County and Barton County
in the region. The Tigers will head into this year’s tournament
looking to avenge last year’s finish.
“We would like to cap off the regular season with a region championship,” Cobble
said. “We will need everybody to play their best tennis.”
Cowley will open play at the Region VI Tournament in Wichita on Friday
at 9 a.m.
