Advancing all six singles players and two of three doubles teams to
the second round of the NJCAA Men’s National Tennis Championship
in Plano, Texas on Monday, the Cowley College men’s tennis team
is currently in a tie for ninth place.
Joan Valls, Felipe Pimenta, and Renato Mendes each won singles matches,
while the Tigers other three singles players received a bye in the first
round.
Pimenta and Mendes also teamed up to win its first round match at No.
2 doubles, while the Tigers’ No. 3 doubles team of Alex Dickson
and Roger White had a bye in the first round.
Cowley’s No. 1 doubles team of Lloyd Bruce-Burgess and Joan Valls
were the only ones to fail to advance to the second round as they were
sent to the consolation bracket with a 4-6, 4-6 loss to Temple College’s
Raul Garza and Chris Lawson.
Temple is in first place with 16 points after the first day of the tournament,
while Jayhawk Conference school Seward County is tied for second with
Meridian Community College with 14 points.
There are 26 teams represented at the national tournament. Here are the
