Cowley tennis in ninth place after day two of national tourney

With two singles players and two doubles teams still playing at the NJCAA Men’s National Tennis Championship in Plano, Texas, the Cowley College men’s tennis team is currently in ninth place out of 26 teams at the tournament.

Collin County Community College and Laredo Junior College are tied for first place with 27 team points, while Vincennes is third with 26 points. Cowley is ninth with 21 points, and is only three points out of the top-five.

Already today, sophomore Lloyd Bruce-Burgess has advanced to the semifinals of No. 1 singles by defeating Scottsdale’s Javier Millan 6-2, 6-4. While, Roger White advanced to the semifinals of No. 3 singles with a come from behind 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over top-seeded Jordan Rozenfeld of Collin County.

After winning his second round match on Tuesday, Cowley freshman Joan Valls lost to top-seed Danny Heidecker of Collin County Community College 2-6, 6-4, 4-6 on Wednesday morning.

Freshman Alex Dickson rallied from an opening set loss to defeat Scottsdale Community College’s Daniel Plasencia 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of No. 6 singles and was up a set in his semifinal match before losing to Seminole State’s Bryan Canavan 7-6, 5-7, 2-6.

The duo of Dickson and White then teamed to win its second round match at No. 3 doubles over Glendale Community College’s Joe Garcia and Chris Vlad 6-2, 6-1.

Sophomore Felipe Pimenta lost to top-seeded Rodolfo Bustamante of Collin College 1-6, 0-6 in the second round of No. 4 singles, while Renato Mendes was also ousted in the second round of No. 5 singles.

Pimenta and Mendes then lost a hard fought match to the top-seeded doubles team of Stan Rodier and Paulo Roessle of Tyler Junior College 3-6, 7-6, 4-6 in the second round of No. 2 doubles.

Bruce-Burgess and Valls received a bye to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket at No. 1 doubles.
The tournament will run through Friday.
