Cowley moves into tie for sixth at national tourney
Earning three and a half more points on Wednesday, the Cowley College
men’s tennis team moved into a tie for sixth place at the NJCAA
Men’s National Tennis Championship in Plano, Texas.
Laredo jumped ahead of Collin County Community College (35-34) at the
top of the team standings, while Tyler Junior College moved into third
place with 32.5 points. Cowley is tied with Seminole State with 24.5
points. The Tigers are only a half point behind fifth place Abraham Baldwin
Agricultural College, but also just a half point ahead of Johnson County
and Scottsdale Community College.
On Thursday, Cowley’s Roger White advanced to the championship
match at No. 3 singles after rallying to defeat Laredo Community College’s
Leury Arias 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals. White will face Vincennes
University’s Simon Honegger in the title match on Friday.
Unfortunately, Tiger sophomore Lloyd Bruce-Burgess came up just short
of advancing to the title match at No. 1 singles as he had to retire
from his semifinal match against Laredo’s Cledson Carvalho due
to leg cramps. After dropping the first set 6-7, Bruce-Burgess won a
second set tiebreaker (7-6) to force a third and final set. Trailing
4-1 in the third set, the leg cramps became too much for Bruce-Burgess
to continue playing through, thus prompting him to leave the court.
Bruce-Burgess and Joan Valls are currently playing in the consolation
final at No. 1 doubles.
The tournament will wrap up play on Friday.
