New faces lead Cowley tennis to convincing win
With six freshmen and only one sophomore competing for the Cowley College
men’s tennis team Wednesday at Southwestern College in Winfield,
the Tigers saw a glimpse of a promising future as they steamrolled
the Moundbuilders 9-0.
Cowley head coach Josh Cobble was pleased with what he saw from the new
players in their first collegiate match.
“Everyone performed really well and did a good job of dealing with nerves,” Cobble
said. “It was a good opportunity for them to get a collegiate match under
their belt and they were able to beat a good KCAC team.”
Cowley dominated in singles play as they lost just four games in 12 sets.
Freshman Joan Valls and sophomore Renato Mendes did not lose a game at
No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Freshmen Alex Dickson, Tom Gibaud,
Richard Lee, and Evan Daniel each dropped only one game in their two-set
wins.
Cowley also won easily in its three doubles matches. The Tiger tennis
players will now prepare to compete at the Wichita Intercollegiate Invitational
Friday through Sunday. Play will begin Friday at 8 a.m.
“We will see some good competition right off the bat, which will be good
so we can see what areas we need to improve,” Cobble said.
