Custar, Quill break school records at Iowa State
Unable to compete at last weekend’s Johnson County Invite due to
weather, the Cowley College men’s indoor track and field team returned
to action with a bang as they broke two school records and hit 13 national
qualifying marks at the Iowa State University Cyclone Open held Friday
and Saturday in Ames, Iowa.
“This helped soothe my nerves a little bit about missing the Johnson
County meet,” Cowley head coach Mark Phillips said.
Sophomore Jory Custar smashed his own school record in the 800-meter
run by four seconds as he placed second with a national qualifying time
of 1:52.40. Fellow sophomore Ray Quill also broke the school record
in the 60-meter hurdles for the second time this season as he placed
seventh with a time of 8.54.
Cowley also had good performances from its pole vaulters with both Rick
Valcin and Michael McLeod placing third with national qualifying marks
of 14-1 ¾.
Mac Griffith, who qualified for nationals in the high jump (6-6) cleared
13-3 ½ in the pole vault, while Cameron Conely made the bar at
12-3 ½.
“I look forward to Mac and Cameron competing in the heptathlon at the
region meet, I think they will make some noise,” Phillips said.
Dustin Mettler, Phillip Banowetz, and Josh Gracia each hit national qualifying
times in the 5,000-meter run, while Mettler and Banowetz also qualified
for nationals in the 3,000-meter run.
Dane Dewitt joined Custar as a national qualifier in the 800-meter run,
and Brice Irving qualified for nationals in the mile run and 1,000-meter
run. T.J. Mapp joined Irving as a national qualifier in the 1,000-meter
run.
The Tigers will take the majority of its field athletes to compete at
the Pittsburg State Invite on Friday, while a select group of athletes
will compete at the University of Arkansas Tyson Invite on Friday and
Saturday.
“The Arkansas meet is one of the premiere events in the Midwest,” Phillips
said.
Cowley will hold out the majority of its distance runners at the Pittsburg
State Invite as they prepare for the Region VI/Jayhawk Conference meet
on Feb. 20-21.
“We have got to get some kids healthy for the Region meet,” Phillips
said.
