Harris, Quill break school records at Tiger Invite

trackReturning to action for the first time in 18 days, the Cowley College men’s track and field team had some strong performances at the Tiger Invite held Monday in Arkansas City. Sophomore transfer Vondrell Harris led the way by breaking two school records, while Ray Quill broke the school record in the 110-meter hurdles.

Harris smashed the school records in the high jump (6-10 ¾) and triple jump (50-5 ½), while placing first and second in the events, respectively.

“Vondrell has gotten off to a great start to the outdoor season,” Cowley head coach Mark Phillips said. “I expected this from him. He has worked his tail off, done everything we asked, and is a talented individual.”

Quill’s time of 14.93 helped him place fourth in the event and break Jimmy Nelson’s previous school record time of 15.24 set during the 2006 season.

Cowley also had three runners qualify for nationals in the 5,000-meter run as Dustin Mettler finished first, Josh Gracia finished fourth, and Phillip Banowetz placed seventh in the event with national qualifying times.

“The depth in the event is kind of a surprise, but coach (Vince) DeGrado has worked really hard to get our middle distance and distance runners going,” Phillips said.

Other bright spots were the performances of freshman Michael McLeod, who qualified for nationals by clearing 14-9 in the pole vault, and sophomore Jory Custar, who placed first in the 800-meter run with a national qualifying time of 1:53.98.

“I was pleased with everybody’s performance after coming back from a long break,” Phillips said.
Cowley will compete at the Hutchinson Night Relays Saturday at 1 p.m.
