Bruce-Burgess, Pavlovic qualify for ITA Small College Nationals
Showing they will be two of the top singles players in NJCAA tennis,
Cowley College’s Lloyd Bruce-Burgess and Adrijana Pavlovic captured
singles titles at the ITA/Wilson Central Region Tennis Tournament played
Friday and Saturday in Oklahoma City, OK.
By winning the singles titles, Bruce-Burgess and Pavlovic qualified to
take part in the ITA Small College Nationals, which will be held Oct.
15-18 in Mobile, AL.
Neither player dropped a set in singles play and capped the tournament
with impressive wins in the finals. Bruce-Burgess defeated Seminole’s
Mbonisi Ndimande 6-2, 6-2 in the championship match, while Pavlovic cruised
past Seward County’s Fanny Benincasa 6-0, 6-0 to take home the
women’s singles title.
“Adrijana and Lloyd picked up their level of play and played better as
the weekend went on,” Cowley College head coach Josh Cobble said. “They
both capped it off really well with their play in the finals.”
Cobble was impressed with the level of competition the Tigers faced at
the tournament.
“Some of the better players in the country were there,” Cobble
said. “We had a pretty rough day on Friday and did not play as well as
we could have. But, overall it was a good weekend.”
Cowley’s Jessica Montemayor rebounded from a second-round defeat
in singles play to rattle off three straight wins and capture the backdraw.
Montemayor and Pavlovic also teamed up to win the backdraw of the women’s
doubles competition.
Cobble was also pleased with the play of men’s tennis players Tom
Gibaud, Felipe Pimenta and Renato Mendes.
Bruce-Burgess and Pavlovic will face stiff competition at the ITA Small
College Nationals.
“They will be playing some of the best junior college tennis players
in the country,” Cobble said. “It will be interesting to see where
they stack up.”
Prior to the ITA Small College Nationals, the Cowley College men and
women’s tennis teams will host Seward County Community College
in a match Saturday at 1 p.m. at the J.C. Louderback Tennis Courts.
“We look forward to having the match here and hope to have people come
out and support the teams,” Cobble said. “This is an opportunity
for people to see the strong teams we have this year.”
