Cowley track teams get off to impressive start

Opening the indoor track and field season Friday and Saturday at the University of Nebraska Holiday Inn Invitational, the Cowley College men and women’s teams had some solid early season performances.
Each team had three individuals and a relay team hit national qualifying marks.

“The whole group competed really well and accomplished some wonderful early season things,” Cowley head coach Mark Phillips said. “This sets us up good for meets to come.”

On the men’s side, Jory Custar (800-meter run), Charles James (shot put), and Michael McLeod (pole vault) each hit national qualifying marks, while Custar and Ray Quill broke school records at the meet.
Custar, a sophomore from Sharon, OK, ran a time of 1:56.27 in the 800-meter run, breaking Larry Hill’s previous school record time of 1:57.07 set in 2008.

Phillips thinks this is just the beginning of a big year for Custar.

“I guarantee that 800 (meter) time is going lower than that,” Phillips said.

Quill’s time of 8.58 in the 60-meter hurdles broke the school’s previous best time of 8.72 set back in 2004 by Jimmy Nelson. While, James and McLeod shined in their first indoor competition.

The Lady Tiger track and field team was led by three sophomores, which hit national qualifying marks. Cecilia Burley (19:02.23) and Robin Ray (19:12.07) each qualified for nationals in the 5,000-meter run, while Katie Gillmore qualified for nationals in the pole vault by clearing 11-3 ¾.

“It was a nice start for some of the ladies, I am pleased with where the majority of them are,” Phillips said.

Freshman Richelle Farley, who came out for the track team after redshirting with the basketball team, got off to a terrific start as she smashed the school-record in the 60-meter hurdles. Farley’s time of 9.28 in the event far surpassed the previous school record time of 9.97 set by Michaela Magallan in 2004.

“Incredible performance, what a start for her,” Phillips said. “She will make a huge difference for us in the sprint relays and hurdles.”

Freshmen Ruthann Ralstin and Elly Adamson also performed well in their first indoor meets.
“We were very satisfied with the performances of both teams and felt like we got a lot of stuff done,” Phillips said.

Along with the University of Nebraska, the University of Minnesota and several NCAA Division II schools were also at the meet.

Cowley will return to action this Friday and Saturday when they take part in the Missouri Southern Stampede in Joplin, MO.

“This will be another tough meet but I look forward to the teams keeping it going,” Phillips said. “We had some wonderful performances early and some near misses, which bodes well for the rest of the year.”
