Tiger track and field athletes compete at pair of meets

Getting in a final tune-up prior to the Region VI/Jayhawk Conference Championships this weekend, the Cowley College track and field teams took athletes to compete at the Pittsburg State Invite and University of Arkansas Tyson Invitational.

Competing at Pittsburg State on Friday, freshmen Richelle Farley had an incredible performance in the 55-meter hurdles as her time of 8.55 was nearly a second faster than the previous school record (9.38) set by Neisha Peterson in 2007.

On the men’s side, Ray Quill placed third in the 55-meter hurdles with a school record time of 7.89. Quill’s time smashed the previous school record time of 8.72 set by Rusty Gray during the 2008 season. Quill just missed qualifying for nationals in the event by .06 of a second.

“Ray is one of our top athletes,” Cowley head coach Mark Phillips said. “He is not 100 percent, which shows how good he is.”

Both Quill and Farley are battling nagging injuries, which they hope to overcome, or at least be able to fight through this weekend.

“They are both hard workers, it’s a shame they are not completely healthy,” Phillips said.

Also performing well and hitting national qualifying marks at Pittsburg State were Cowley’s Cearra Reddig in the women’s shot put (38-7 ½) and Rick Valcin in the men’s pole vault (14-3 ¼).

“We knew Cearra had the ability, she can be about as good as she wants to be,” Phillips said. “And Rick is so fast and athletic that he will jump as high as his mind will let him jump.”

With the University of Arkansas Tyson Invite being one of the premier indoor track meets in the Midwest, there were very tough entrance standards to get into the meet.

Robin Ray, Cecilia Burley and Katie Gillmore represented Lady Tiger track athletes at the meet and each hit national qualifying marks in their events. Ray took more than 12 seconds off the school record in the 3,000-meter run (10:19.60) and placed 12th behind some of the top NCAA Division I runners in the country.

Burley also ran well in the event and placed 23rd with a national qualifying time of 10:43.07. The only runners to finish ahead of Burley were also NCAA Division I athletes.

Gillmore was just a little over an inch away from breaking her own indoor school record in the pole vault as she placed 16th by clearing 11-4 ¼.

On the men’s side, Jory Custar placed 14th in the 800-meter run with a national qualifying time of 1:55.89, while sophomore Brice Irving finished 24th in the mile run with a time of 4:29.64.

The Tiger track and field teams will now turn its attention to the Region VI/Jayhawk Conference Championship beginning Friday with the Pentathlon/Heptathlon in Overland Park. The pentathlon/heptathlon will run through Saturday and the remainder of the meet will be held Sunday in Manhattan beginning at 10:15 a.m.

The men’s team will be gunning for its fourth straight indoor conference title.

“We will have a big target on our back,” Phillips said. “It won’t be easy but we will be going there trying to keep the streak going.”

After finishing in second place in the conference a year ago, and placing third in 2008, the Lady Tigers will attempt to capture their first conference title since 2007.

“We hope to get the conference title back,” Phillips said. “It will be a battle between us and Coffeyville.”
